Wolves down 2-1 to Marconi at WIN .
In what was a great day of football for spectators, it was a shame that our First Grade side narrowly conceded defeat with a late goal in the last 10 minutes.

                                 2010 N.S.W. PREMIER LEAGUE
                         SOUTH COAST WOLVES v MARCONI
South Coast Wolves went into the half time break, one goal to the good, but unfortunately conceded two goals in the second half, to succumb to the Marconi Stallions in Round 2 of the NSW Premier League. This match was played on Saturday night with a 6.30 p.m. kick off at WIN Stadium.
Both teams went into this match with changes from their respective first games. South Coast Wolves player Mark Piccolini was suspended after he came on as substitute in the 2-1 defeat at Bonnyrigg White Eagles. Marconi welcomed back midfield player, Nahuel Arrarte, whose Korean sojourn was somewhat short lived. In their previous match, Marconi had defeated West Sydney Berries 1-0.
Both teams started this game a little tentatively as players sussed out each other. A Wolves player put his first pass into touch without any pressure being applied. Conversely in the third minute of play, the Marconi goalkeeper journeyed right outside his area as he just cut out a pass that was intended for Wolves striker, Andrew Paine.
As players settled, both teams were spreading the ball around with quick passing movements. Wolves midfield trio Lisandro Berbis, Tayfun Buyukkopru and Jason Triforio were to the fore. Marconi’s front two Erick Anabalon and Aleksander Canak were threatening, but the defenders Dave Abel and Alex Mansueto were keeping them at bay.
Marconi’s Jared Lum made a ground breaking run down the right side after ten minutes and got his pass away to Anabalon. His subsequent forceful shot went straight into the waiting arms of Wolves’ goalkeeper, Brody Crane.
A cross-field pass from South Coast’s Tynan Diaz found left defender Nicholas McInerney. He motored down the left and fired in a shot that was on target, but Chronopoulos gratefully accepted the ball into his arms.
In the 20th minute defender Abel scored South Coast’s goal after he rose high under pressure from defenders to head home a cross that was launched into the box by Ken Chun from his position on the left side. Abel’s header was directed with force and it flew past the outstretched hands of Marconi goalkeeper James Chronopoulos into the goal.
In the previous minute another Abel header was goal bound after he latched onto Buyukkopru corner kick. However, it was somehow kept out.
Marconi had a great chance to equalise in the 22nd minute. Anabalon had eluded two defenders and worked the ball onto his favored left foot. With only the goalkeeper to beat he skied the ball, undoing all his enterprising work.
In the 35th minute, McInerney received a pass from Paine. He steamed towards goal. His stinging shot went just centimetres wide. A minute later, a Diaz corner from the left was swung in and Chronopoulos had troubled controlling it. He fumbled, but the Wolves could not take advantage of the situation.
Immediately prior to the half time whistle, Canak escaped his markers and produced a shot that was destined to lodge inside the near post. Crane was alert to the danger and got down well to thwart him.
South Coast Wolves went into the half time break with a well-deserved 1-0 lead.
Marconi restored parity eleven minutes after half time when Canak fired in a low trajectory cross. The ball brushed the arm of a Wolves’ defender. He did not appear to move his arm and the ball did not seem to change its path. Following a handball appeal from the kicker, and unfortunately for the home team, the referee signalled a penalty kick. Nahuel Arrarte’s ensuing penalty shot went down the middle of the goal, as Crane valiantly dived to his right.
After the equalising goal, Marconi‘s confidence was restored somewhat and they gained a lion’s share of possession for much of the remaining time. They went looking for the winner and moved up quickly in defence. Matthew Gordon, who sneaked in to steal the ball away from an unwary Buyukkopru exemplified this newfound enthusiasm. Canak was also beginning to find some space.
However, the Wolves went agonisingly close to getting their second goal when a Paine header looped over the advancing goalkeeper. The ball was nearly over the line but Brenton Rhodes just got there in the nick of time to clear it away to safety.
Marconi scored the winner in the 85th minute. A defence splitting pass fell to substitute Nathan Jagelman. He displayed a clean pair of heals down the centre and his shot made no mistake.
Five minutes earlier, substitute Kieran Deane found himself one on one with Chronopoulos. The fully stretched goalkeeper saved his effort disappointing the home fans. This certainly was a costly miss for the home team.
In the four minutes of injury time Diaz put pressure on the Marconi defence when he went forward to stir things up, but all to no avail in the end.
Marconi probably deserved their victory on the strength of their second half performance. However, the South Coast Wolves can curse their bad luck with the penalty decision and the clearance off the line by Marconi when a goal beckoned.
